Ryan Marlow

MDI’s Creative Services Manager

Starting off

“I started off at MDI in 2003, as a selector in perishables. I was full-time but moved to part-time while I finished my degree in graphic design.

“When I first started, I was definitely surprised by MDI’s size. But, as a selector in the warehouse, I was a little removed from the rest of the company – I didn’t realize its scope until I actively looked into it.

After I received my degree in graphic design, I went back to work full-time in advertising, as a graphic designer. I did more and more photography on the side because I saw a need for it in the company. I worked less in ad building and more photography, videography, and graphic design. I do a lot of videography when I travel.”

Current role

“The role I have now, as Creative Services Manager, is not just a catalyst to growth, it’s a catalyst to create. I’ve always been a creative person, and my role encompasses everything I love to do: photography, design, videography. I get to watch my work enhance MDI’s image, elevate it, and leverage its creative capabilities. Plus, I get to talk to everyone in the company, all over the enterprise, which is always interesting.

Mentors

“Mike Bencivengo has been a great mentor. He’s helped me grow professionally and personally. But there’s so many that have helped me along my journey here.”

MDI has given me opportunities to find my own opportunity. I’ve basically been able to create my own position. I filled a need that MDI didn’t have, artistically speaking.
